Maggie Mac Neil was born in Jiujiang, China, one of the poverty-stricken areas in the country. She was abandoned on her birthday.

One year later, she was adopted by a Canadian couple. Twenty years later, she becomes an Olympic champion, after beating her Chinese opponent.
