The Two Angels In The Deep Mountain

In Buddhism, a hero has to suffer. They give all the goodness to others, nothing but suffering left for themselves……

My mom has two younger sisters, Xiu and Feng. They live in the depth of mountains for their whole lives. Like many girls growing up in the fifties, they dropped out of middle school, poor and hungry. Their lives pretty much relied on who they married. Xiu and Feng married the local guys and lived an isolated life ever since. As the gap between in and out of the mountain grew bigger, they grew more reluctant to go outside.

20 years or so ago, Xiu lost her husband to cancer. Feng’s husband was a small officer in the town, drunk and abusive. For decades, she suffered serious depression.

Fast forward to 2020, when the pandemic hit the world, their small town in the mountain was perfectly isolated. But my two aunts’ life was hit by a string of mystical accidents. Feng’s husband was hit by a car, broke a couple of ribs. She went to the hospital to take care of him, riding an electric bike. One week later, she was hit by another car, and broke one leg. She was sent to the same hospital room with her husband.

Xiu’s life wasn’t easy, either. One day she was taking a shower. She slipped, hit the pipe, her skull was fractured…
