“It was the best of times; it was the worst of times”.

When I read this line “A Tale of Two Cities” by Charles Dickens. It was indeed the best time of my career. I was the CEO of a company in Cologne, Germany. My family stayed in China. There was no smartphone or Youtube at that time. I had too much time after work. So, I started to read English books.

They say a foreign language opens a window to a new world, the classic books are the diamonds your eyes would first catch through the window. I couldn’t be greedier picking up the beautiful diamonds all those years. I read every single book written by Charles Dickens, many with multiple times. And other books were like, “The Pride and Prejudice”, “Jane Eyre”, “the Wuthering Heights”,”1984”, “the Moon and Sixpence”.

Ooh, I can’t remember how many times I had read The Moon and Sixpence. Charles Strickland’s desire for painting was like Whoa~~, it burned me whenever I picked up the book. I read Ernest Hemingway’s war novels, watching how the war affected the lives of ordinary people. I felt the sorrow of The Great Gatsby who would not let go of the hopeless love. I admired Mitchell’s attitude to the hardship of life in Gone with the Wind when she said, “Tomorrow will be another day.”
